Give your pre-loved books a new home and raise money for literacy

Vauxhall-based charity, The National Literacy Trust is calling on supporters to gather new and pre-loved books and share their love of reading by holding a Big Book Sale.

From 30 November to 6 December, Big Book Sales will take place around the UK to raise money for the charity to continue its vital work to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills they need to succeed.

Research shows that one in five children leave primary school unable to read well, which rises to one in three children from poorer backgrounds. Proceeds from Big Book Sales across the country will enable to National Literacy Trust to support these children to develop their literacy skills and inspire them to enjoy reading.

Bestselling author Joanne Harris has shown her support for the Big Book Sale. She said: “Literacy is at the heart of a caring and well-run society. I am delighted to be supporting the National Literacy Trust’s Big Book Sale, which will help the charity to continue its vital work. I’m urging as many people as possible to sign up and hold their own book sale and share books they’ve enjoyed, all in support of an important cause.”

Supporters can choose where they hold their Big Book Sale – from homes and offices to local community and church halls.

Everyone who signs up will receive a fundraising pack with lots of great ideas for their sale, as well as materials including posters, balloons and bunting.

They’ll be encouraged to ask friends and family to share second hand books and contact local book shops that may have stock to donate.

The first 10 people to sign up will also receive extra packs with a selection of books to get them started.

National Literacy Trust Senior Fundraising and Events Manager, Suzie Curran said: “National Literacy Trust research shows that almost one in seven children aged eight to 11-years-old don’t have a book of their own. If you’ve got shelves of books that deserve to be read again, the Big Book Sale is a great way to share them with friends and colleagues, while helping us to spread a love of reading among children and empowering them to reach their potential.”
