A Season of Sharing

Vauxhall One’s Christmas appeals supported two local charities this year: Graham House and Vauxhall Foodbank.

Our Graham House Gifts appeal provided 66 presents for the residents of Graham House this Christmas. Rethink, Royal Vauxhall Tavern and Southbank House hosted collection baskets for gifts, and we received donations from staff in these offices as well as from Citywire, Ramblers and Ovalhouse.

Anne White of Rethink said “I like the idea of giving a gift. I like the idea of just helping someone keep a little bit warm, especially around Christmas. In my case, it was the fleecy throw.”

In addition, we raised £650 for Vauxhall Foodbank through our Food Basket Appeal. This will supply 15 food baskets to local families in crisis and support the Foodbank’s vital work in our community.

Vauxhall One is taking part in a major exhibition at the Building Centre

Rethinking the Urban Landscape is all about new ideas for Britain’s Urban Streets and Parks.

Vauxhall One is exhibiting the Missing Link Green Trail which runs up Vauxhall Walk from the Pleasure Gardens to the new Damien Hirst Gallery on Newport Street.

The first phase is currently under construction outside the Tea House Theatre and features Rain Gardens, which take the rainwater from the street and use it to irrigate the plants and trees in specially design beds.

This idea of sustainable urban drainage (SUDs) reduces the risk of flooding in urban areas.

The Exhibition runs from 8th January to 10th February and can be found off Tottenham Court Road at The Building Centre, Store Street WC1E 7BT

Commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day

HMD is on 27 January each year

It is a time for everyone to stop and remember the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. By learning the lessons of the past, we hope to improve society today by tackling issues such as prejudice and hate crime in local communities.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is a Vauxhall-based, national charity that asks local workplaces to mark HMD for their employees in easy ways. Businesses are obviously busy, but HMDT is on hand to provide you with the resources and support you need to make it happen. You may only have a couple of minutes to put up a poster display, leave a few ‘About HMD’ booklets in the canteen or send around an office-wide email to bring employees’ attention to the day, but HMDT can send the free posters and leaflets, and provide you with the text for the email.

By spreading the messages of HMD, you can help cement your organisational values and create a more inclusive and welcoming working environment, which can have a positive impact further down the chain to customers and suppliers.

If you have a bit more time, then HMDT can help facilitate a poetry reading, a lunchtime discussion around the themes or a screening of one of its presentations, to name but a few examples. You can read a bit more about putting on a workplace activity in the Get involved guide for workplaces.

If you would like to order one the free Activity Packs which contain the poster set, or boxes of the ‘About HMD’ booklets, which come in packs of 50, please email ben.small@hmd.org.uk.

HMDT is based in Vauxhall too, so Ben would be happy to come down to meet with anyone that wanted to talk about putting on an HMD activity further.

Quietways Consultation

Transport for London (TfL) has launched a new consultation proposing changes to junctions on the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN).

The junction is on one of the first two pilot routes of the Quietways and TfL would like to know what you think about the proposals.

The Quietways will deliver a pan-London network of high quality, well signed cycle routes predominately using back streets with little traffic. They are designed to overcome barriers to cycling, targeting less confident cyclists and those who prefer a more relaxed journey. Quietways will complement other cycling initiatives, such as the Central London Cycling Grid and Cycle Superhighways.

The Tower Bridge Road junction with Rothsay Street and Webb Street is part of TfL’s road network and is on the Inner Ring Road. The junction also forms part of the proposed route of the Waterloo to Greenwich Quietway, which runs across Tower Bridge Road, between Rothsay Street to Webb Street. In July 2014 LB Southwark (LBS) undertook consultation on their proposals for this section of the route on the roads that it maintains.

This TfL consultation proposes the closure of Rothsay Street from Tower Bridge Road to all traffic except cycles and emergency vehicles. These changes will provide more space and a better level of service for cyclists and pedestrians. Access to and from Tower Bridge Road will be maintained for local traffic via Alice Street and Green Walk.

The proposed modified junctions reflect the emerging improvements in cycling infrastructure design standards to:

  • Improve safety for cyclists
  • Increase the number of cyclists and cycle journeys
  • Reduce journey times for cyclists
  • Use some innovative design features recognised as best practice
  • Reduce traffic speeds
  • Improve the environment for local residents and businesses
  • Not to disbenefit other road users

How can I find out more?

To view our proposals and have your say, please to go directly to the consultation here:

https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/cycling/tower-rothsay-webb

The consultation closes on Thursday 26 February 2015.

The Quietways form a key part of the Mayor’s Vision for Cycling; a 10 year plan to deliver cycling improvements across the Capital. By 2022, £913m will be invested in cycling and we envisage over £123m to be allocated to the Quietways programme.
