Success at two fully booked Open House London walks

On Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September Chris Law, Public Realm Director at Vauxhall One, hosted two guided walks of the area as part of the annual Open House architecture weekend.

The walks were very well subscribed with over 50 participants on both days, ranging from architects interested in the new buildings to local Londoners and those from further afield just curious about new developments and the changing face of London.

The groups gathered at the Tea House Theatre to hear about the historic Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens and then walked up Vauxhall Walk to the new Damien Hirst Gallery on Newport Street.

Then they passed through the Garden Museum before walking down the Thames Path along Albert Embankment down to Battersea Power-station.

The guided architectural walk took in views of the new developments including the new American Embassy and the new horse sculptures on the Thames fore-shore.

Fortunately both days were wonderfully sunny and a lively discussion on the changing face of Vauxhall was had by all.

Thank you from Summer Events Academy

Thank you to everyone who attended Vauxhall One’s Summer Events Academy ‘Bridging the Gap’ networking event on Thursday 27 August.

The Kia Oval kindly hosted the evening in the stunning Montpelier Club overlooking cricket ground.

The Events Academy provided training for local young people to improve their employment prospects and provide real world experience opportunities.

The Interns organised a fantastic evening that both informed businesses about the benefits of youth employment and provided an opportunity for members over wine and nibbles.

Vauxhall One appreciates all of the members that attended the event, The Ben Hollioake Learning Centre and Rethink, for providing office space for Interns, and Debating London, The Big Issue Foundation, EmploySE1, Saint Peter’s Church and Vauxhall One staff for leading trainings and workshops.

Vauxhall-based charity Axis Foundation hit £500,000 donation milestone

The Axis Foundation has reached an impressive and wonderful milestone; the total amount of money raised and donated to good causes has surpassed £500,000!

In 2009, Vauxhall-based Axis Europe formed the Axis Foundation and ever since then has been helping the local community and has now reached the monumental milestone.

The Foundation has provided support in the form of equipment, large donations, small donations or even just a helping hand.

The board of trustees consider all cases and have given support to a number of different causes: from organising a monthly afternoon tea to get the socially-isolated elderly out of the house, to equipping a football tournament for those with hearing impairments.

In Vauxhall, they’ve given £20,000 to Vauxhall City Farm for them to continue their Riding Therapy Centre for disabled and disadvantaged children in the local area like Harry, aged 14, who said: “My main fun in life is horse riding. I go once a fortnight and it is the thing I look forward to most.”

Supporting programmes like this allows children like Harry some escape and enjoyment and their smiles are a great reward for the Axis Foundation.

As well as receiving corporate donations, this year totalling £90,000, the people of Axis regularly fundraise for the Foundation with dress up days, lottery draws, cake bake-offs, hairdressing, skydives, and even shaving a few heads.

All at Axis appreciate the positive difference the Axis Foundation can make and all enjoy the camaraderie of fundraising together and helping to give back to the community in which they work.

On the Foundation and the fundraising, Axis Chief Executive John Hayes said: “Giving back is in our DNA. We’ve tried to focus on the areas where we’re active by supporting small and meaningful causes rather than big and grandiose ones. Everybody at Axis gets involved in one way or another through volunteering or fundraising; we do all sorts. The work of the Foundation is very important to us and I’m very thankful to everyone who has contributed to its work. Without the effort and commitment of all our people, we would not have been able to make such a difference.”
