Cherry Tree Walk plans for Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens

Cherry Tree Walk

The Friends of Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens have commissioned renowned landscape architect and historian Todd Longstaffe-Gowan (http://www.tlg-landscape.co.uk) to design a cheery tree walk on the diagonal path that leads from the main entrance to the park to the newly built Cabinet gallery and Tyers Street.

The ornamental flowering trees will be planted in clusters, will likely be a mix of native and exotic varieties to ensure maximum impact of colour variations, flowering times and sequencing to prolong the flowers. This will not only maximise the visual effect but also benefit pollinators throughout the spring and summer and allow for grater biodiversity.

The project will also tackle the ongoing flooding of the path by raising and rebuilding it, as well as creating a swale gardens where the water will be redirected and absorbed by a cluster of willow trees.

The Friends are currently planning to fund the scheme and its maintenance , but are eager to find sponsors that can match fund their investment.

Donations of single trees, tree clusters, tree guards or benches to be interspersed through the trees would be most welcome.

All donations will be much appreciated and acknowledged.

Jet Washing of pedestrian tunnel 28/03 – 08/04

From Monday 28th March Vauxhall One will be providing a deep clean, jet washing service to the pedestrian tunnel next to the Vauxhall Rail Station for ten nights.

Please see attached the contractor’s Method Statement and schedule of work.

The work will consist of jet washing, cleaning and chewing gum removal on the pedestrian areas of the tunnel.

The areas of work included; the pavement in front of the Station and South Lambeth Road outside Nando’s restaurant. Jet washing and painting of the tunnel’s ceiling is also scheduled to take place.

Vauxhall One would advise that pedestrians use the tunnel on the other side of the station, between these set working times, however narrow access will be maintained at all times.

Green Capital – green infrastructure for a future city.

The 2050 London Infrastructure Investment Plan, establishes the need for the equivalent of 13,000 football pitches of new green space in London by mid century to deliver the environmental benefits necessary to support economic and population growth.

Natural Capital, underlines the need for urban green infrastructure (GI) and sets out the policy changes, governance, valuation and funding needed to deliver this. GI plays a vital role in mitigating poor air quality and localised flooding, whilst sustaining valuable wildlife habitat – adapting our city to climate change and making it more environmentally resilient.

GI in an urban landscape can also promote healthy living and active travel, enhancing the public realm and making it more liveable and attractive for residents, businesses and visitors.

Over the past four years, Vauxhall One BID has been working with local partners, TfL, Lambeth Council and business members to deliver a range of GI projects. This has been supported by the Mayor, Drain London Fund, Natural England and the regeneration agency Cross River Partnership, through the Greening the BIDs Steering Group.

In 2013 Vauxhall One undertook a Green Infrastructure Audit to identify existing local green assets and the opportunities for new ones. The Missing Link is just one of the examples of the green infrastructure projects we have delivered with members help, benefitting Vauxhall.

To showcase a selection of GI installations delivered by us and our partners, celebrate successful public/private collaboration, articulate the multi-functional benefits of GI, inspire a wider audience and attract future funders, we have collaborated to produce a short inspirational video, Green Capital – green infrastructure for a future city.

This is accompanied by a user-friendly brochure of successful green infrastructure installation case studies, along with information and advice about the benefits and a delivering GI ‘how to’ guide. You can access that here.
