Kennington Lane Shopfront Regeneration

Vauxhall One oversees the investment of £50,000 to refurbish eight shopfronts on Kennington Lane.

In March 2016, Vauxhall One the Business Improvement District (BID) for Vauxhall, was awarded a £50,000 grant from the Great London Authority’s (GLS) New Homes Bonus scheme (NHB) to make improvements to the shop fronts on Kennington Lane.

After a four week consultation process, eight independent shops were chosen for refurbishment including local favourites Caffé Italia, Kennington dry cleaners and Lucky Fish Bar. The improvement works focused on decluttering shop fronts, repairing any broken features then replacing the shop signs and awnings. The work was carried out from June to August 2016, by the multidisciplinary design agency, Designed by Good People and has resulted in cleaner, brighter shopping parade for Vauxhall.

This recent refurbishment is part of Vauxhall One’s ongoing public realm improvement work, which aims to create a more visually appealing Vauxhall that will enhance the area’s reputation and encourage new and retuning visitors alike.

Owner of Caffe Italia and local resident Marco Bertarini praised the improvements;

“It’s a great step up and being Vauxhall’s only high street it’s important that the shops along Kennington Lane reflect the wider improvements in area. As an independent shop owner and local employer it not always possible to pay for large upgrades to the external elements of your shop, so I think its brilliant that Vauxhall One have got involved and helped out the smaller businesses in the area.”

Vauxhall One Programme Manager, Aaron Groves said:

“One of the BID’s key aims is to continue to strive for better public realm in Vauxhall. We are really pleased with the results and feel that the new improved shopfronts enhance the area, bringing some uniformity and colour to Vauxhall’s only highstreet.”

Orlando Incident and Counter-Terrorist update

All at Vauxhall One where deeply saddned to hear that, on Sunday 12th June 2016 at about 02:00 local time at Pulse nightclub, Orlando, Florida a gunman opened fire, killing at least 50 people and injuring dozens before being shot dead by police. Pulse, which is one of the biggest LGBT nightclubs, in Orlando had more than 300 people inside at the time, when the man opened fire.

The threat to the UK from international terrorism remains unchanged at SEVERE, as it has been since August 2014, meaning an attack is highly likely. The UK police and security and intelligence services are working to confront the terrorist threat and keep the public safe. They urge the public to be alert but not alarmed and report anything suspicious to the confidential anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321. In an emergency always call 999.

Response to Orlando Incident

Detective Superintendent David Roney from the office of the National Coordinator Protect Prepare said: “While our security measures and activities are under continual review, UK police forces will be further reviewing plans for large-scale and other public events over the coming days and weeks following the terrorist attack in Orlando, Florida. The public should remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or activity to the confidential anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321 or in an emergency call 999.”

Detective Superintendent David Palmer from the MPS Protective Security Operations Command added: “As we have seen around the world terrorists target people of all beliefs and backgrounds, including those who are LGBT. The threat level to the UK – and all it’s communities – is severe meaning an attack is highly likely, and our protective security measures are consistent with the level of threat. We are not advising any organisers to cancel or postpone any LGBT-related events.”
