In the 1700s, Vauxhall was known across Europe for its culture, fashion and entertainment, including acrobats, performers and outrageous stunts. Often referred to as the birthplace of outdoor entertainment, the Gardens were renowned for their huge cast of characters made up of dancers, singers, musicians, orchestras and artists.
Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens were always lively thanks to their openness to people of all ages, backgrounds and classes, and people travelled from afar to get a taste of an entirely new entertainment concept, rooted in pleasure-seeking.
