Northern Line Extension – Monthly Update: March – April 2016

Thank you for your patience whilst we continue with the Northern Line Extension works near you. We would like to update you on where we are and what is planned for the next four to eight weeks.

What has been completed:

Work continues with the removal of pile obstructions from the former Covent House. These works are essential as the old piles are currently in the line of the planned route of the tunnel.

The temporary traffic lights that were positioned at the end of Pascal Street while relocating the TfL signalling boxes will be removed Friday 11 March. After which will then revert back to the original traffic light system.

What is planned:

The first two plunge columns and guide frames were delivered to site in preparation for installation within the bearing piles as detailed on last months’ update. Two of these steel beams will be inserted per week over the next five week period. These works are planned to commence at the end of this week. Please note that due to the size of the steel plunge columns, deliveries need to be carried out outside of core working hours in accordance with the Highways Authorities’ regulations and as instructed by the Metropolitan Police. We will advise the community when these are due to take place.

The guide wall (made of concrete) along the Wandsworth Road end of site is due to be removed w/c 21st March. Preparatory works have been completed to split the guide wall into sections. These pieces will be pulled away from the secant wall using the bucket attachment of an excavator. To effectively remove certain sections, a breaker will be required during this operation. As this may produce some noise, acoustic shielding will be used and regular dust and noise monitoring will be undertaken.

At the beginning of April on the same side of the site, we will be constructing the concrete capping beam which will sit on top of and connect the piles. These will form part of the foundations for the future structures above the station. We do not expect this activity to be noisy and this phase of work will be ongoing until around November.

Piling works will continue to take place along the eastern and western side of the NLE site.

Our core hours:

0800 to 1800 Mondays to Fridays and 0800 to 1300 on Saturday

Additionally, due to the nature of piling works, it has also been agreed with the Local Authority that extended work hours will be available on occasions to give time to complete specific piling activities. Updates will be given to you in advance of these works with full details.

As previously notified, Thames Water are undertaking utilities works along the Wandsworth Road to survey and jet wash some of the sewer pipes using the machine in the picture below. For further details, please revert to the NLE Nine Elms noticeboards or contact William Chan on 0203 577 8226 or William.chan@thameswater.co.uk. These works are expected to complete by 21 March.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions about the works or would like to attend the next Community Liaison Group meeting taking place on Tuesday 15 March 19:00-20.30 at the Bolney Meadow Community Centre.
