Transforming Vauxhall Cross gyratory: TfL and Lambeth’s consultation closes 2nd January 2015

Radical new plans to transform the gyratory at the heart of Vauxhall have been revealed

Consultation will run until 2nd Jan 2015 and is open to all, including Vauxhall One business owners and employees. The consultation will help to shape further design of the new highway layout, with further consultation on the detailed plans due next year.

The Vauxhall Cross proposals include:

Removing the one-way gyratory traffic system at Vauxhall Cross and returning the roads to two-way working. This would help create new retail, residential, employment and educational opportunities and attract further investment to the area. Vauxhall is one of a number of major gyratories that TfL and London’s boroughs are looking at removing over the next ten years.

Making improvements to the rail, bus and Tube interchange including the current bus station. This would complement the recent 25 per cent increase in capacity of the 185 bus route and the ongoing £36m Vauxhall Tube station upgrade, which will provide step-free access to the Victoria line and reduced congestion within the station.

Creating a thriving centre for Vauxhall – a more attractive, safer, greener place for all those who live, work and travel through. Cllr Jack Hopkins, Lambeth Council Cabinet Member for Growth and Jobs, said: “Vauxhall has so much exciting potential that’s not been realised because it’s dominated by traffic. I’d urge people to make sure this consultation reflects the widest possible views of those who live, work and travel in Vauxhall.”

Chair of the Vauxhall One board George Foster commented:

‘Our conversations with businesses often centre on the Vauxhall gyratory, and its lamentable effect on the character of the area and the physical health of their employees. We applaud the efforts of LB Lambeth and Transport for London to remove the gyratory and replaced it with something that restores the balance between pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. This could be the key in unlocking the great potential of our area. We urge the owners and employees of our member businesses and others to participate fully in the consultation, and also to work with us to ensure the best outcome.’
