Aspiring entrepreneurs Mazí Mas provide opportunities for women from migrant communities

Mazí Mas is a roaming restaurant that brings global home cooking to the public, and in doing so provides employment opportunities for women from migrant and refugee communities.

The social enterprise is dedicated to supporting women who aspire to careers in the food industry to gain paid work experience, develop their skills, tell their stories, and connect with the wider public.

Since March 2015, Mazí Mas have set up shop at Ovalhouse Theatre, where they run a full-time restaurant.

Alongside, they launched their first ever three-month training program for ten aspiring women entrepreneurs, with training sessions covering kitchen skills such as butchery, fish filleting and knife skills; and business skills including menu costing, budgeting and drafting of a business plan.

Additionally, all women completed the Food Hygiene and Safety Level 2 course, an essential asset when seeking employment in the catering industry.

Currently, the Mazí Mas restaurant at Ovalhouse is working with chefs hailing from Peru, Iran, Brazil, Nicaragua and Ethiopia.

The mains at the restaurant change daily, depending on who is heading the menu – you can find them weekly on their website and social media.
