Holocaust Memorial Day 2016: Keep the Memory Alive

All welcome, no booking required, free entry

Holocaust Memorial Day 2016 will commemorate survivors, victims and refugees of the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and subsequent genocides.

The theme for the 2016 commemoration set by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is Don’t Stand By. This theme encourages us to consider how we; as individuals, communities and organisations; can do more to prevent and combat prejudice and discrimination. We need to challenge ourselves to ensure we aren’t simply standing by but are striving to make a difference in our own communities. We can all combat prejudice and discrimination if we hear and see it in our schools, workplaces or civic spaces.

At Lambeth’s commemoration event we will share the life stories and memories of those who have suffered from the atrocities of persecution. Through remembering the past and focusing on its contemporary relevance we can strengthen our individual and social responsibilities not to be bystanders to hate crime, prejudice and international threats of genocide.

Survivors, victims and refugees will always remain at the centre of HMD; for many survivors, influencing behaviour today and relationships with others in our communities are crucial reasons for their commitment to speaking about their experiences. For some, the focus will be on individual acts of kindness that signify we will not turn a blind eye when those around us face prejudice or victimisation.

Please join us on Sunday 24 January 2016, at the Ashes Suite, Kia Oval, Kennington from 3.00pm to 4.30pm.

Our keynote speaker will be Lord Alfred Dubs, who will provide an insight into his experience as one of the survivors saved by Sir Nicholas Winton on one of the very first trains out of German-occupied Czechoslovakia to the UK in March 1939.

We will also have a film screening, poetry readings from Dunraven School and musical contributions from the Corpus Christi School Choir.
