Vauxhall One is the Business Improvement District (BID) for Vauxhall. BIDs are established by local businesses to improve the area as a place to live, work and visit. They provide services additional to those supplied by the council and other statutory providers.

BIDs are democratically elected by their members and must hold a ballot every 5 years. Each 5-year plan focusses on the projects, values and services that matter most to the local business community.

BIDs are non-profit organisations governed by their member businesses. Funding is collected via the BID levy and reinvested directly back into the local area.

Businesses with a rateable value of over £20,000 pay an annual levy of 1.56%. Charities, community groups and other non-profit organisations qualify for a relief in levy. This levy income is reinvested into our key focus areas for the improvement of Vauxhall: Cleaning, Greening, Safer, Better and Destination.

The Bid levy

The BID levy is a mandatory charge for businesses that occupy premises inside the BID boundary. The following are not eligible for the BID levy, nor may they vote in a Vauxhall One BID ballot:

  1. Business premised with a rateable value below £20,000
  2. ‘Central List’ properties that are not in the local rating list
  3. Advertising rights, telephone masts, car parks and parking places, kiosks
  4. Residential estate offices
  5. Schools

How is it calculated?

The BID levy is charged at 1.56% of the rateable value of each hereditament, listed in the Ratings List, that your business occupies. For example, if your premises’ rateable value is £50,000 your annual BID levy will be £780.

Businesses with mandatory and/or discretionary relief from business rates will have their BID levy discounted at the same rate.

How is it collected?

Lambeth Council collects the BID levy on behalf of Vauxhall One. It is payable in two instalments per year, with bills raised in March and September and payment due on 1st April and 1st October.

The BID levy is a mandatory charge and collection is enforceable in the same way as the business rate. Further details are set out in the formal Operating Agreement between Vauxhall One and Lambeth Council, which is available on request.
