Classical Vauxhall presents: Elephants in the Custard

Classical Vauxhall and the London Philharmonic Orchestra have teamed up to present Elephants in the Custard, an interactive musical story film for children aged 5–7.

The 24-minute film is based on the children’s book of the same name, published by Owlet Press, which explores how it feels to have a worry, and the importance of making time to talk to each other.

Children are invited to join in with the actions, catchphrase and song, complete with live brass music from LPO musicians and dancing elephants!

As part of Classical Vauxhall, the video was available exclusively to Lambeth schools before its official release. The public premiere and watch party will take place on YouTube at 2.00pm on Thursday 29 April.

Talia Lash, Education & Community Manager from the LPO said:

“We are delighted to be part of the Classical Vauxhall festival again this year with our children’s film, Elephants in the Custard. The challenges of the past year have made it more important than ever for children to be supported to talk about their feelings, and we believe that music has the unique power not just to tap into emotions directly, but also to engage, entertain and delight.”

You can watch the full Elephants in the Custard film for free from 29 April on lpo.org.uk/elephants

Accompanying written and video resources for teachers are also available on the LPO website.

Open Call to Artists: Art in the Arches

Vauxhall One and Moniker Culture present Art in the Arches, an open call to all artists to bring colour and creativity to Vauxhall’s arches.

The project offers paid commissions to transform the appearance of arches in central Vauxhall, with both digital and hand-painted artwork.

Vauxhall has long been a place where differences are celebrated and anything goes, referenced in the artistic theme for the project: Love Different, Love Vauxhall.  This celebrates the diverse and vibrant spirit of the area, and artists are encouraged to express themselves freely.

The available commissions are:

  • hand-painted murals on Goding Street, opposite the Royal Vauxhall Tavern and Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens
  • customised digital artworks on one of Vauxhall’s main walkways, Albert Embankment

The open call will run from 26 April to 31 May.

Art in the Arches is delivered in a partnership between Vauxhall One, Moniker Culture and The Arch Company.

All details about the project, entry requirements, templates and application form can be found on the Art in the Arches website.

Bernard Collier, CEO of Vauxhall One:

“Vauxhall has long been an inspiration for artists dating back to the 17th Century. Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens were painted by Canaletto and Whistler, and the area is attributed with opening the world’s first galleries. Today, Vauxhall is home to a number of superb contemporary galleries with Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery, the Cabinet Gallery, Gasworks, Beaconsfield, and the Sunday Painter. Vauxhall One is eager to build on this legacy by sending a callout to artists to transform these arches into bold works of art. I am excited to see what people come up with.”

Tina Ziegler, Director of Moniker Culture:

“Moniker Culture is thrilled to work with Vauxhall One to bring some colour and creativity to the vibrant community of Vauxhall. The Love Different artistic Open Call is a great opportunity to engage with some of London’s leading new contemporary and urban artists and we are honoured to help bring the project to life.”

Creating Pocket Gardens in Vauxhall

The Vauxhall One greening team has been busy creating new pocket gardens on previously unloved patches of land in central Vauxhall.

The team has already transformed two plots this spring, with new green spaces outside MI6 on Albert Embankment, and at the entrance to Vauxhall City Farm on Tyers Street.

Monica Tyler, CEO of Vauxhall City Farm, commented:

“The new green beds outside the farm are a welcome sight, its greatly enhanced our entrance to the farm and our visitor experience.  Since the farm reopened last week, we’ve received so many compliments from our neighbours and visitors, who are so pleased with the new look, it gives a great entrance into our little oasis.
Thank you so much Vauxhall One!”

The gardens feature plants that were selected to improve local biodiversity, such as heathers, spiraea and euphorbia.

These greening projects are part of Vauxhall One’s commitment to improve the public realm and make Vauxhall a better place to live, work and visit. In addition to greening, the team also tackles graffiti, creates murals and public art, and produces events throughout the year. Read more in the Vauxhall One round-up of 2020 projects.
