This summer, people working in Vauxhall have had the opportunity to explore more of the area around their workplace thanks to a series of walks hosted by Vauxhall One and Lambeth Tour Guides.
Running once a month between May and October, each walk focuses on a different theme relating to Vauxhall’s intriguing history and is guided by a local, accredited guide. So far, we’ve met some of south London’s most inspirational women; explored how industry has shaped the streets and riverside; and walked in the footsteps of the pioneers of outdoor entertainment who performed in the Pleasure Gardens in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The walks are designed to fit comfortably into a 60-minute lunch break, with time to grab a bite to eat either before or afterwards. Bernard Collier, Vauxhall One’s CEO, is passionate about the history of the area and keen to share its stories with the people who walk its streets every day.
“There’s so much more to Vauxhall than the transport hub. We know that many people come here to work, and probably just move between the station, their office, and one of the popular lunch spots. The idea of these walks is to encourage people out into the sunshine to learn a bit more about Vauxhall’s fascinating past. Hopefully they’ve returned to the office with some little-known facts to wow their colleagues with!”
If you haven’t yet had a chance to join one of our lunchtime walks, there are still two more chances:
Thurs 19 September: The Changing Riverside (Free)
Thurs 3 October: Walking Boots & Books (Free)
If you prefer a longer stroll, our weekend walks might be just the ticket! Coming up this autumn:
Sat 22 September: Inspirational Women of Vauxhall (£10)
